Lion Health is a teaching practice, and we are committed to providing a high standard of education for our undergraduate medical students and postgraduate GP registrars.
Medical students
We teach medical students from the University of Birmingham throughout the year, and they are supervised by the GPs at the practice.
All students are subjected to the same ethical codes as qualified doctors and you can be assured of confidentiality.
There are lots of opportunities for patients to play a positive role in educating the young doctors of the future.
Student surgeries
Each week a small number of patients can get involved within “student surgeries”. Within these surgeries a student takes on the role of the G.P., asking questions and then examining patients. Following this, you will be seen by one of the partners who will in conjunction with the student arrange appropriate management of the problem.
If offered an appointment in a student surgery please be aware that your appointment will take longer than a usual routine appointment.
Some surgeries are videoed to help aid the consultation skills of the students. You will be asked to sign a consent form and can opt not to have the consultation videoed if you wish.
Expert patients
At the surgery we like to give students the opportunity to talk to patients about their particular illness or problem. This gives the students a valuable insight into living with a long-term illness, and the effects it can have on both the patient and their families.

Clinical skills sessions
We are always looking for volunteers to help with the students’ clinical skills sessions.
This allows students to practice taking blood pressure, visual acuity and reflexes.
These sessions are always supervised by one of our doctors.

Registrars
Along with our Partners (GPs that own and direct the organisation), and Salaried GPs (employed by Lion Health), our registrars are qualified doctors who are here for a period of time while they complete their General Practice training. They come from a wide range of medical backgrounds and offer fresh and different specialism’s to complement our practice.
Each one has a named G.P. trainer who supervises their attachment at the practice.
They provide routine appointments and are fully supported by all members of the practice.
